why fyfe

We work together as a family, doing everything possible to keep our chickens happy.

Taking good care of them and giving them plenty of space to roam is the way we love to do things because we know the difference it makes – from happy chickens on the farm to healthy eggs in the kitchen.

We’re a 100% Australian-owned and operated, three-generation family business. And these are we’re proud to share, from our family to yours.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT’S IMPORTANT WHEN LOOKING AFTER FREE-RANGE CHICKENS?

#1 – Making sure the hens are safe when they are outside of the barn from hazards such as predators or dirty water

#2 – Keeping the hens warm and comfortable inside of the barn by monitoring the weather and temperature inside the barn

#3 – Ensuring the feed equipment is functioning well so the hens have access to quality food and fresh drinking water

The basics are pretty simple – the complicated work happens inside of the chicken!

HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR HENS HAPPY?

While hens are friendly animals, they can become stressed easily. We only work with staff and farmers that understand how to keep hens relaxed and stress-free.

When we work with hens in the barns or paddocks, we always remember, it’s not our home – it’s theirs. Before entering the barn, we knock on the door. No one likes unexpected guests. While working in the paddocks, we move slowly, to help them feel relaxed around us.

Just like children – hens are curious and playful creatures. They love to peck at things to understand what they are. And they even follow people. We can tell that they are happy because of how relaxed they are – and of course, all the healthy eggs they lay!

WHAT MAKES OUR EGGS FREE RANGE?

Our free range hens range at less than 10,000 birds per hectare. During daylight hours, our hens enjoy the fresh countryside air and the freedom to wander outdoors to play and engage in their natural behaviors such as dust bathing & making sandpits. At night, they return to their barn, protected from other animals and harsh weather, for a good night’s sleep.

All farms that supply Farm Fyfe Eggs are Free Range Accredited

DO THE HENS LOVE BEING OUTDOORS?

Hens are animals that love comfort just like humans. If the weather is nice, hens will be encouraged to go outside and play. However during hot or cold days, the mild climate and comfort of feed and water inside the barns is too good for them to resist.

WHAT DO CHICKENS EAT?

Our hens are fed a diet formulated by a nutritionist consisting of a wide variety of ingredients that contain essential nutrients such as carbohydrates, fat, protein, vitamins and minerals. Their feed consists mostly of Aussie grown grains such as wheat, barley, faba beans and canola meal. Their diets are specifically formulated to give them strength and vitality.

DO BIGGER HENS LAY BIGGER EGGS?

The size of the egg depends on the age of the chicken, not their size. At the start of a hen’s laying period, she’ll typically lay smaller eggs, between 48-60g per egg. These go inside the 600g cartons. Bigger eggs are laid by hens who are in the peak of their laying cycle. These eggs are 57-68g and will go into the 700g cartons.

HOW BIG ARE THE FARMS THAT PRODUCE FYFE FAMILY EGGS?

Fyfe Family Eggs come from farms with barns that house between 15-20k hens. This may seem huge, but this size is the standard across the industry. Whilst both small and large barns work well for farming happy free range hens, large barns similar to ours play a bigger part in supplying everyday Aussies.
